I love to cook so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. When ever a new small kitchen appliance comes out that is designed to make the annoying tasks easier I always like to give them a try. I have to say that I am a big fan of electric can openers. They're not necessary of course, but they are pretty inexpensive and eliminate the need of spending time opening cans manually. You just insert the can...turn it on...leave and come back to a can that is ready to be used. If you are looking to buy one then just be sure it has everything you need to get the job done.
The two different cutting methods that I have seen are either the top or side cutting can openers. The standard method we are all used to is opening a can from the top which works great. There is however, an electric can opener that opens the cans from the side. This comes very handy with electric can openers because the blade does not get food on it and so does not need to be cleaned. The top cutting openers do get some food residue on them but they tend to have a removable blade for cleaning. Be sure to check that the blade is removable if you are buying a top cutting can opener.
